About Us
When the first Stompy started tattooing in 2010 there weren’t many options for aftercare to choose from. The classics were pawpaw and bepanthen - neither of which were made to heal tattoos…
So the rabbit hole of research began to create the perfect aftercare cream, for artists by artists. Our industry and lived experience, combined with a passion for chemistry and skincare, has led us to launch our very first aftercare product - Snake Oil.
Why Aftercare?
Any professional Tattoo Artist will tell you there’s no perfect way to heal your tattoo, but which aftercare you choose (and how you use it) will have a huge impact on how well your tattoo might heal.
Keeping your tattoo from getting infected is one of the most important factors, which is why your aftercare should include an antiseptic. There are lots of natural antiseptics (like the ones we use) so don’t stress about having hospital grade chemicals on your skin - strong and gentle can exist at the same time.
Don’t worry, we know healing traumatised skin can get hot, swollen and infuriatingly itchy - even when you’re following all the rules. Making that journey more comfortable and as sensory friendly as possible was at the top of our list when we started developing our aftercare formulas.
What’s in snake oil
Calendula Oil
Laboratory research has shown that calendula flower components have a marked anti-inflammatory and antibacterial action, and heal wounds by helping new blood vessels and new tissue to form. The dried petals—the parts used—contain high levels of flavonoids, including lutein and beta carotene, which are antioxidants that help protect against infection and cell damage caused by free radicals.
Shea Butter
Shea butter can help promote wound healing. In addition to reducing underlying inflammation, shea is also linked to the tissue remodeling that's crucial for treating wounds. Its protective fatty acids may also help shield wounds from environmental irritants during the healing process. Shea Butter has been extracted from the nut of the Shea tree in West Africa and used as cosmetic and therapeutic skin care lotion for thousands of years.
Oat Oil
Oat oil is extracted from the kernels of oat by involving a tender process that helps to retain all the essential components. It is a natural skin emollient. It has a high content of antioxidants, essential fatty acids and phospholipids. Research shows that oat oil has vitamin E and lipids which helps to soften the skin, hydrates and protects skin.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is perhaps one of the most widely used herbal remedies for topical skin conditions. This is because the gel-like components of the plant are known to heal the skin from a variety of minor ailments. Its molecular structure helps heal wound squickly and minimizes scarring by boosting collagen and fighting bacteria.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is linked to some potential skin benefits, including reducing inflammation, keeping skin moisturized and helping heal wounds. The medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil also possess antimicrobial properties that can help treat acne and protect the skin from harmful bacteria.
Manuka Honey
Manuka honey has an antimicrobial effect, which means it may destroy microorganisms, such as bacteria. Manuka honey has a low pH and lowering the pH of a wound can speed up the healing process. The antibacterial effects of Manuka honey can also help wounds remain free of bacteria.
Sunflower Wax
Sunflower Wax is a vegetable wax obtained from the winterization of sunflower oil. Sunflower oil is rich in Vitamin A and Vitamin E which help in promoting skin health. These vitamins act as antioxidants. They help in regenerating damaged skin cells and getting rid of the acne causing bacteria.
Witch Hazel
Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a shrub that’s indigenous to the United States. It’s been used for centuries by Native Americans as a remedy for a variety of skin ailments related to irritation and inflammation.
DL Panthenol
The National Center for Biotechnology Information lists panthenol as a skin protectant with anti-inflammatory properties. It can help improve skin’s hydration, elasticity, and smooth appearance. It also soothes: red skin, inflammation, little cuts or sores like bug bites or shaving irritation. Panthenol helps with wound healing, as well as other skin irritations like eczema.
